Itaipu Binacional and Itaipu Parquetec to develop pilot battery energy storage system (BESS) project for solar-hydro integration

Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Brazil and Paraguay · Announced: 2026-07-07

Itaipu Binacional and its technology arm Itaipu Parquetec are structuring a pilot battery energy storage system (BESS) project to test the integration between a floating solar plant and the existing hydroelectric infrastructure. The initiative aims to evaluate technical performance metrics such as energy shifting, operational flexibility, and complementarity between photovoltaic generation and hydroelectric production. The project will follow technical criteria similar to Brazil's LRCAP auction parameters, including a minimum four-hour autonomy requirement and continuous power supply during that period. While still in the structuring phase, the pilot is designed to generate operational data that will inform future investments in electrochemical storage and renewable energy expansion across Brazil and Paraguay. Itaipu's CEO Enio Verri highlighted potential to expand floating solar capacity at the reservoir to over 1 GW, reinforcing the strategic vision of integrating hydro, solar, and storage systems.
