Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. (JAPEX) has announced a consortium study with the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and Padjadjaran University to evaluate oil and gas exploration potential in Indonesia’s North Sumatra Basin. The study, announced on July 21, 2026, will involve field surveys and data analysis covering both offshore and onshore areas of the basin. This initiative aligns with JAPEX's Management Plan 2026–2035, which designates Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, as a core area for asset development and revenue growth. JOGMEC will provide institutional and methodological support, leveraging its established framework for overseas geological and geophysical surveys, while Padjadjaran University contributes regional academic expertise. The consortium aims to build a clearer picture of undiscovered resources, following recent large-scale gas field discoveries in the historically material oil and gas-producing area.
