Kalfresh partners with WELTEC BIOPOWER to deliver Queensland bioenergy facility

Type: Partnership · Technology: Biomass · Country: Australia · Announced: 2026-07-08

Kalfresh, a Queensland-based vegetable business, partnered with German anaerobic digestion technology provider WELTEC BIOPOWER to design and build the first stage of a landmark bioenergy facility at Kalbar in South-East Queensland. The agreement covers the construction of the initial anaerobic digestion (AD) tank, with WELTEC's equipment scheduled to arrive on site in late August 2026 for immediate construction. The facility will anchor the new Scenic Rim Agricultural Industrial Precinct, a 40-hectare site featuring 16 serviced lots including three occupied by Kalfresh. At full capacity, the project could include up to 14 digesters capable of producing enough energy to power 31,000 homes or fuel 98 million kilometers of truck and bus travel annually. The partnership enables Kalfresh to convert crop residues, processing offcuts, and agricultural waste into renewable energy and nutrient-rich digestate for biofertilizer, advancing its circular agriculture vision.
