Lightsource bp, a global renewable energy developer, signed a hybrid offtake agreement with Rio Tinto to supply renewable electricity from the Lower Wonga solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) to Rio Tinto’s operations in Queensland. The 380 MWdc solar farm combined with a 281 MW / 843 MWh battery storage system will generate enough electricity to power approximately 126,000 homes annually once operational in late 2028. The project, located near Gympie in Queensland, Australia, is supported by the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme, ensuring long-term revenue certainty. Lightsource bp appointed a joint venture between INTEC Energy Solutions and Gotion Hi-Tech Australia as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project. The hybrid structure integrates solar generation with battery storage to deliver dispatchable renewable energy, addressing grid flexibility and reliability needs for industrial consumers like Rio Tinto.
