Lointek selected to supply Natrium reactor vapor generation system with thermal storage

Lointek, a Basque industrial company specializing in equipment and systems for large energy and industrial installations, has been selected to participate in TerraPower's Natrium project in Wyoming, United States. The agreement covers the design, engineering, and supply of the vapor generation system for the plant, which combines a sodium-cooled nuclear reactor with molten salt thermal storage. This configuration allows increasing electrical output from 345 MW to 500 MW for over five hours during peak demand, providing flexible capacity to the electric grid and facilitating renewable energy integration. The plant will be divided into two independent areas: the Nuclear Island housing the reactor and nuclear systems, and the Energy Island integrating electricity generation and management systems. The U.S. Department of Energy has committed up to $2.0 billion for the development of this technology. The first Natrium installation will be constructed in Wyoming with financing from TerraPower and the DOE.
