Málaga-based private equity firm Lunas Energy launched Merchant Plus, a financing model allowing solar plant owners to integrate battery energy storage systems (BESS) without upfront investment. The deal involves Lunas financing and installing the BESS, which is hybridized with the existing photovoltaic plant behind the point of connection. In exchange, the plant owner signs a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Lunas for 20 to 25 years. The model targets merchant solar plants in Spain and aims to increase total merchant revenues by up to 33%.
