Luxcara, BKW AG and Trianel form partnership to develop 900MW Waltrop battery storage project in Germany
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Germany · Capacity: 900 MW · Announced: 2026-07-20
Luxcara, BKW AG and Trianel, through the vehicle T‑BESS 1 GmbH & Co. KG, announced a partnership to advance the 900 MW Waltrop battery energy storage system in North Rhine‑Westphalia, Germany. The consortium will oversee the construction of the substation and associated infrastructure, with the next major construction phase slated to start in autumn 2026 and commissioning targeted for 2028. The project will deliver a minimum of 1,800 MWh of storage capacity, supporting grid stability and renewable integration in the region. The partnership leverages Luxcara’s investment expertise, BKW AG’s utility experience, and Trianel’s coordination of municipal utilities, strengthening Germany’s battery storage pipeline. Final permits for the substation were granted in May, and the exemption from network charges confirmed by the Federal Network Agency will reduce operating costs for the developers.
