Microsoft and BioCirc sign 7-year carbon removal offtake agreement for BECCS platform in Denmark
Type: Ppa · Technology: Biomass · Country: Denmark · Announced: 2026-05-20
Microsoft and Denmark-based BioCirc announced a 7-year agreement for the offtake of up to 650,000 tons of carbon removal credits generated from BioCirc’s bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) platform. Under the deal, Microsoft will purchase 100,000 carbon removal units (CRUs) annually from BioCirc, with each CRU representing one metric ton of CO2 permanently stored in geologic formations beneath the Danish North Sea. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026 and continue through 2032. BioCirc operates eight industrial-scale biogas plants with an annual production capacity exceeding 175 million cubic meters, and the agreement will enable the company to scale its integrated platform combining biogas production, renewable energy, and CO2 capture and storage. The transaction marks Microsoft’s first major carbon removal purchase since reports indicated a temporary pause in its carbon removal procurement program.
