Type: Development · Technology: Hydrogen · Country: Ethiopia · Announced: 2026-05-12

Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy received regulatory approval to proceed with its Qiying Wind and Green Hydrogen Project in Ethiopia, marking a material expansion of its clean energy portfolio in Africa. The project, initially announced with a $10 billion investment commitment, has seen its planned spending increased as part of the finalized development plan. Mingyang Smart Energy, one of the world's leading wind turbine and clean tech suppliers, will lead the development of this colossal initiative, which combines onshore wind power generation with green hydrogen production capabilities. Located in Ethiopia's Qiying region, the project is expected to integrate large-scale wind farms with electrolyzers to produce ammonia for export markets, leveraging Ethiopia's renewable energy potential and strategic position in North Africa. The approval follows months of feasibility studies and negotiations with Ethiopian authorities, with construction expected to commence in 2026 and commercial operations targeted for 2028. This project represents Mingyang's largest single investment in Africa to date and underscores China's growing role in financing and developing green hydrogen infrastructure across the continent.
