MODEC partners with Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering to build Gato do Mato FPSO hull

Type: Partnership · Technology: Oil Gas · Country: Brazil · Announced: 2026-07-02

MODEC and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering entered a partnership to construct the hull of the Gato do Mato FPSO, a vessel capable of producing about 120,000 barrels of oil per day. The forward hull section was built at Sumitomo’s Yokosuka shipyard in Japan and shipped to China for integration with the aft section on July 2, 2026. The completed FPSO will operate in water depths of roughly 2,000 meters, about 200 km south of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil’s Orca field. This collaboration marks the first use of MODEC’s Next Generation Hull design and the first FPSO hull built under a multi‑yard construction model, expanding the company’s global delivery flexibility. The project will be the 19th FPSO MODEC has developed for Brazil and the second directly delivered to Shell, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership for both firms. No financial terms were disclosed, and the partnership does not involve external lenders or advisors.
