National roaming agreement signed for Ireland's emergency services

The Irish government announced that the country's three main mobile operators - eir, Three Ireland, and Vodafone - have signed a national roaming agreement for mission-critical communications used by first responders. The agreement, coordinated by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO), will allow compatible devices and applications used by emergency services to connect to whichever participating mobile network is available, rather than being reliant on a single telco. This deal forms part of the government's ambitions to modernize emergency communications and support the transition from traditional TETRA radio systems to next-generation mobile broadband technology capable of carrying voice, video, mapping, and operational data. Testing of the new functionality will be coordinated by Civil Defence in partnership with OGCIO and participating agencies in the coming months. The agreement will support An Garda Síochána, the fire services, the National Ambulance Service, and Civil Defense by ensuring emergency personnel can maintain access to critical information and communications services regardless of location.
