South Korean cloud company Naver has invested in US startup Panthalassa, which is developing a floating data center platform called Ocean-3. This investment aims to strengthen Naver's competitiveness in next-generation AI data center technologies powered by renewable energy. Panthalassa's Ocean-3 platform is designed to be autonomous and self-propelled, generating clean wave energy to power a modular AI data center without anchors or cables connecting it to land or the seabed. The company plans to deploy its Ocean-3 platform for testing this year, targeting commercialization in 2027, with potential power generation costs as low as $0.02 per kWh.
