The New South Wales Energy Security Corporation (ESC) committed $100 million to Plus Grid Storage to develop a large-scale battery platform across Sydney, Newcastle, and the Hunter Central Coast. The investment will fund four grid-scale battery projects, with the first two being 200 MW / 400 MWh facilities located at Steel River Industrial Estate in Newcastle and Homebush in Sydney. The next two projects, with capacities of approximately 100 MW and 150 MW, will have their locations announced later. Construction on the Newcastle project is set to begin in July 2026, with the first 500 MW of storage expected to be operational by early 2029, followed by an additional 150 MW in late 2029. ESC CEO Paul Peters highlighted the strategic importance of building batteries in high-demand areas where land is constrained and storage needs are urgent.
