Ontario awards 640 MW of eight-hour battery storage contracts to Atura, Neoen, and Six Nations Group with 50% Indigenous equity ownership

Type: Ppa · Technology: Storage · Country: Canada · Capacity: 640 MW · Announced: 2026-06-15

Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator awarded 640 MW of eight-hour battery storage contracts through its Long-Term 2 Capacity Window 1 procurement, marking a material expansion of the province’s utility-scale storage capacity. Three projects were selected, each featuring 50% Indigenous equity ownership, with developers including Atura, Neoen, and Six Nations Group—all members of the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA). The contracts were administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator, which has now procured approximately 3.6 GW of utility-scale battery storage in total. Ontario’s electricity demand is projected to rise sharply due to electrification and industrial growth, positioning the province as a benchmark for large-scale storage in North America. CanREA highlighted that Ontario is home to Canada’s largest battery energy storage projects, with other jurisdictions observing its rapid storage pipeline development. The procurement follows the financial close of a 1.2 GWh battery storage facility in late 2024, reinforcing Ontario’s leadership in grid-scale energy storage.
