Orange and CEA launch joint research laboratory for AI-native semantic communications networks
Type: Partnership · Technology: Telecom · Country: France · Announced: 2026-06-18
Orange and France’s CEA launched a joint research laboratory named AI-Native Communications to develop semantic communications technologies for future AI-driven networks. The five-year partnership aims to reduce data volume across networks by shifting from traditional bit-level error correction to meaning-based transmission, cutting energy consumption and infrastructure needs. The collaboration will focus on anticipating network evolution, building shared semantic representations between AI models, and contributing to emerging 6G standards. CEA’s Grenoble team brings expertise from France’s Future Networks and France 6G programs, as well as international projects like 6G-GOALS and 6GARROW. Orange, with 700 researchers and 11,000 patents, is involved in standards efforts such as SUSTAIN-6G and Hexa-X, positioning the project within a broader European sovereignty agenda.
