Type: Investment · Technology: Storage · Country: Japan · Capacity: 589 MWh · Announced: 2026-09-30

Orix Corporation announced the start of construction on two grid-connected battery energy storage systems after securing external capital on 30 September 2026 to fund the projects. The deal covers the 70MW/280MWh Yufu Energy Storage Plant in Oita Prefecture and the 75MW/309MWh Yonezawa Energy Storage Plant in Yamagata Prefecture, totalling 589MWh of capacity. Orix will retain a 23.7% ownership stake across the projects while Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation and two other unnamed investors will collectively hold 76.3%; Orix will manage assets and Orix Renewable Energy Management Corporation will handle construction safety and post-COD O&M. Yufu is scheduled to reach commercial operation in 2028 and Yonezawa in 2030, and the financing marks Orix’s first use of third-party capital for grid-connected energy storage in Japan. The transaction supports Orix’s strategy to expand its asset management business and improve capital efficiency by incorporating third-party investment.
