Orlen Synthos Green Energy applies for Contract for Difference to finance 14 BWRX-300 small modular reactors in Poland
Type: Financing · Technology: Nuclear · Country: Poland · Announced: 2026-06-30
Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) formally applied to Poland's Minister of Energy for a Contract for Difference (CfD) to finance the construction of 14 GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy BWRX-300 small modular reactors (SMRs) across three sites in Poland. The total capacity of the initial phase amounts to 4,200 MW, with the first unit expected to be commissioned in Włocławek by 2032. The project is part of a broader OSGE program targeting 26 BWRX-300 units, leveraging economies of scale and modularization to reduce unit costs for both industrial and residential customers. The CfD mechanism will provide revenue stability by settling the difference between a predetermined strike price and market electricity prices over the project's lifetime. OSGE CEO Rafał Kasprów emphasized that the CfD approval would enable the development of a robust SMR supply chain in Poland, positioning the BWRX-300 as a cost-attractive, carbon-free baseload power source.
