Osaka Gas partners with Sumitomo Forestry to launch home battery service Sumai Denchi EX in Japan
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Japan · Announced: 2026-07-15
Osaka Gas and its subsidiary Osaka Gas Marketing announced a partnership with Sumitomo Forestry to roll out Kyocera's Enerezza Plus II residential battery system and the Sumai Denchi EX energy management service for newly built solar homes in Japan. The service, targeted for launch as early as 2026, will enable households to aggregate battery capacity into Japan's balancing and capacity markets, creating a revenue stream beyond feed‑in tariffs. The partnership combines a surplus‑solar purchase arrangement and a plan to supply renewable power during construction of new homes. This initiative follows recent pilots by Kyushu Electric Power and Tohoku Electric Power that used Sharp home batteries for grid balancing, reflecting a broader shift among Japanese utilities to monetize residential storage. By being the first to offer market trading for home batteries, Osaka Gas aims to unlock new revenue opportunities and strengthen its position in the evolving Japanese energy market.
