Overview Energy wins Department of War contract to develop homing beacon for space-based solar transmission

Overview Energy was awarded a Department of War contract through the Operational Energy Capability Improvement Fund (OECIF) to develop a homing beacon for its space-based solar energy system on 2026-09-30. The beacon hardware will be installed at ground receiver sites to allow Overview satellites to lock onto and authenticate connections with intended terrestrial receivers, preventing signal spoofing and hijacking. Overview Energy has previously demonstrated core tracking and pointing technology via airborne power-beaming demonstrations and plans an orbital demonstration of its space solar energy in 2028. The award follows an earlier 2026 contract from the Department of War for Overview to provide space-based solar power to U.S. Air Force sites in constrained environments and complements a commercial agreement to provide Meta with output from an orbital solar array up to 1 GW capacity. The OECIF program, first funded in 2012, has previously funded space and solar-related projects and the Department of Energy is also preparing a related space-based photovoltaic R&D funding opportunity closing 2026-10-08.
