Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Oil Gas · Country: Brazil · Value: $427M · Announced: 2026-06-18
Petrobras, through its subsidiary Transpetro, awarded a $427 million contract to Estaleiro Rio Grande for the construction of four medium-sized oil tankers (MR1 type) to support its hydrocarbon transport operations. The vessels, measuring 175 meters in length and 30 meters in width with a gross tonnage of 40,000, will transport crude oil, diesel, and gasoline along Brazil's coast and between offshore platforms and onshore bases. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in 33 months, with the contract part of Petrobras' broader Programa Mar Abierto initiative, which aims to modernize and expand its fleet with 20 coastal vessels, 18 barges, and 18 tugboats by 2030. The new tankers are designed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% and cut pollutant emissions by 30%, with future compatibility for biofuels and shore power connections at electrified ports. The initiative supports Petrobras' goal to increase oil production from 2.7 million barrels per day in 2026 to 3.4 million by 2030, enhancing its logistics capacity to meet refining and export demands.
