A consortium led by Plus Grid Storage, including the Government of New South Wales, IFM Investors, APG Group, and AustralianSuper, is developing the Steel River East battery energy storage system (BESS) in Mayfield West, Newcastle, Australia. The 200 MW / 400 MWh project, located adjacent to an existing Ausgrid substation, received final construction approval from the Independent Planning Commission of New South Wales in March 2026 after addressing 61 public objections. The system will utilize 112 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, each weighing approximately 38,000 kilograms, requiring over 2,200 cubic meters of concrete and 200 tons of steel reinforcement for structural support. Steel River East is the first grid-scale battery project for Plus Grid Storage and marks Ausgrid's entry into large-scale energy storage, contributing to New South Wales' transition toward a stable, low-emissions energy system. The project is one of three major battery storage initiatives announced by Ausgrid, alongside a 200 MW / 400 MWh installation in Homebush and the pending Rothbury BESS (135 MW / 540 MWh) in the Hunter region.
