Redwood Materials and Rivian partner to deploy second-life EV battery energy storage system at Rivian’s manufacturing plant

Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: United States · Capacity: 10 MWh · Announced: 2026-04-15

Redwood Materials and Rivian launched a partnership to deploy a second-life battery energy storage system at Rivian’s manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois. The system integrates over 100 second-life Rivian EV battery packs into a Redwood Energy system supported by Redwood Pack Manager technology, initially delivering 10 MWh of dispatchable energy. Designed to reduce energy costs and alleviate grid strain during peak demand, the project leverages EV batteries that remain functional beyond vehicle end-of-life for stationary storage applications. Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe highlighted the partnership’s role in utilizing vehicle batteries to support grid health and American competitiveness amid growing energy needs. Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, provides grid energy storage and recycles critical battery materials, including lithium, nickel, cobalt, and copper.
