Rolls-Royce SMR secures multimillion-pound contract with Vattenfall to supply three nuclear SMRs in Sweden
Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Nuclear · Country: Sweden · Announced: 2026-06-19
Sweden awarded a multimillion-pound contract to Rolls-Royce SMR for the supply of three small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) as part of the Videberg Kraft project, marking Sweden's first new nuclear facility in over four decades. The agreement, valued in the billions of pounds, will see three 470 MW reactors installed on the Värö peninsula in western Sweden, adjacent to the existing Ringhals nuclear plant. The project, led by Videberg Kraft—80% owned by Vattenfall and 20% by a Swedish consortium—aims to deliver approximately 12 terawatt-hours of annual electricity, covering around 6% of Sweden's annual consumption. The first reactor is expected to come online by the mid-2030s, pending regulatory and permitting processes. The deal positions Rolls-Royce SMR as the sole European developer with multiple contractual commitments for SMR deployment, following recent agreements with Czech energy group CEZ and Great British Energy-Nuclear.
