Salzgitter Flachstahl and Zelestra sign hybrid solar and battery storage PPA in Germany

Type: Ppa · Technology: Hybrid · Country: Germany · Capacity: 147 MW · Announced: 2026-09-15

Salzgitter Flachstahl and Zelestra signed a hybrid power purchase agreement covering two solar and battery storage projects in Germany with a combined 147 MW of solar capacity and 79 MW / 237 MWh of battery storage. Zelestra will build, own, and operate the projects in Brandenburg and Thuringia, while Salzgitter Flachstahl will purchase approximately 158 GWh of solar electricity annually and control the associated battery systems. The batteries will be charged exclusively using surplus solar generation, allowing Salzgitter to align renewable electricity deliveries with demand from its steelmaking operations under its SALCOS decarbonization program. The agreement represents the first hybrid PPA in Germany for both companies and marks Salzgitter Flachstahl's first operation as a battery storage operator. The deal supports Salzgitter's commercial green steel production goals and was described by Zelestra as the largest hybrid deal in Germany to date.
