Sato Technologies signs preliminary agreement to develop 100MW AI data center in Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City
Type: Development · Technology: Data Center · Country: Bhutan · Capacity: 100 MW · Announced: 2026-07-07
Canada-based Sato Technologies, formerly a cryptomining company, signed a letter of intent to develop a 100MW AI data center in Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a planned 2,600 sq km development with autonomous governance. The project's first phase will deliver 5MW of capacity with an expansion pathway to 500MW, leveraging Bhutan's hydroelectric power resources which supply nearly all of the country's electricity. Sato will source power from Bhutan's hydroelectric grid, which generated approximately 2.5GW in 2024, meaning the expanded 500MW facility could consume up to 20% of national electricity output. The data center will target AI infrastructure demand in South Asian markets, aligning with Bhutan's strategy to monetize surplus hydroelectric power through high-value digital infrastructure. The GMC, announced in December 2023, offers foreign investors executive, judicial, and legislative autonomy to encourage business development.
