Scatec ASA and Aboitiz Power Corporation form joint venture to develop and operate Magat battery energy storage system in the Philippines
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Philippines · Capacity: 16 MW · Announced: 2026-05-15
Scatec ASA and Aboitiz Power Corporation launched a 50:50 joint venture to develop and operate the 16 MW Magat battery energy storage system (BESS 2) in the Philippines, connected to the existing Magat hydropower plant. The one-hour battery system will generate revenues from the ancillary services reserves market, leveraging fast response times and flexibility to support grid reliability. This project builds on an existing 24 MW battery system at the Magat plant, which has been operational since 2024, and expands Scatec’s operating battery capacity to 40 MWh with an additional 120 MWh under construction. The joint venture is financed through debt facilities linked to the Magat hydropower plant, ensuring structured funding for the infrastructure. Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec, highlighted the project’s role in strengthening the company’s position in battery storage and ancillary services within the Philippines. The initiative demonstrates Scatec’s ability to develop flexible energy infrastructure that enhances grid reliability and renewable energy integration.
