Schneider Electric and Southern California Edison partner to deploy SF6-free substation technology at two Los Angeles-area substations
Type: Partnership · Technology: Transmission · Country: United States · Announced: 2026-07-06
Schneider Electric and Southern California Edison (SCE) announced a collaboration to deploy sulfur hexafluoride-free (SF6) gas-insulated switchgear technology at two existing substations in the Los Angeles region. The first two projects are scheduled for installation in 2027 at the Great Lakes substation in northern Los Angeles County's Antelope Valley and the Running Springs substation in the San Bernardino Mountains. Schneider Electric will provide its GMAirSeT switchgear integrated into compact, pre-assembled substation systems designed for rapid installation without major system rebuilds. SCE, serving approximately 15 million people across its service territory, aims to double grid capacity within existing substation footprints while reducing emissions by eliminating SF6, a potent greenhouse gas with an atmospheric lifetime exceeding 1,000 years.
