SK Telecom (SKT) announced plans to construct a 15GW AI data center cluster across South Korea, positioning the country as Asia’s leading AI infrastructure hub. The project will commence with a 2GW facility in Ulsan and expand to 5GW by 2029, including an additional 1GW in the Jeolla region, with operations phased in starting 2029. SKT will lead the design, construction, and operation of the data centers, leveraging its existing partnerships with major technology firms to attract AI infrastructure demand. The initiative aligns with South Korea’s 'AI G3' strategy, aiming to balance regional development while addressing the country’s stable power supply conditions, including nuclear and LNG-based energy sources. Financing will be secured through SKT’s own investments, strategic partner contributions, long-term customer contracts, and project financing, with the company emphasizing the project’s role in pre-emptively preparing Korea’s computing infrastructure for global AI ecosystem needs.
