Smart Commercial Energy signs MoU with Nauru Utilities Corporation for 18 MW solar and 40 MWh battery storage project
Type: Partnership · Technology: Solar, Storage · Country: Nauru · Capacity: 18 MW · Announced: 2026-05-08
Sydney-based Smart Commercial Energy (SCE) signed a memorandum of understanding with Nauru Utilities Corporation to develop an 18 MW solar and 40 MWh battery storage solution for the Republic of Nauru. The project aims to replace Nauru's heavy reliance on diesel-generated electricity, which currently consumes 7–8 million litres annually for a 40 GWh annual energy load. SCE proposed a commercial power purchase agreement (PPA) structure, where the system will be funded, built, and operated by SCE with an option for Nauru to eventually purchase and own the infrastructure. The 21 square kilometre island nation, located 3,300 kilometres northeast of Australia, faces unique energy security challenges due to its diesel dependence. The deal was formalized during the Smart Energy Conference and Exhibition 2026 in Sydney, marking a rare instance of a company signing an MoU with an entire country.
