SNCF partners with Bankset Energy Group to test off-grid solar stations on railway infrastructure
Type: Partnership · Technology: Solar · Country: France · Announced: 2026-07-24
SNCF has entered into a partnership with Bankset Energy Group to evaluate off‑grid photovoltaic solutions on its railway network. Bankset’s solution is a battery‑backed, removable solar station dubbed “La Grosse Bankset beta 1”, which has been operating on a technical site in Paris since January 2025. The system can be installed or removed in under two minutes without heavy interventions on the track. The test aims to assess the feasibility of large‑scale solar deployment across SNCF’s 48 000 km of rail lines, of which 28 000 km are in operation. Successful results could provide a renewable power source for the transport group, one of France’s biggest electricity consumers.
