Spain's Ministry of Defense to deploy NATO's first tactical 5G network at Lešť military base in Slovakia

Type: Development · Technology: Telecom · Country: Slovakia · Announced: 2026-06-11

Spain's Ministry of Defense will deploy NATO's first tactical 5G network designed for real-world military operations at the Lešť base in Slovakia, where Spain leads NATO’s multinational Battlegroup. The project, spearheaded by the Joint Cyber Command (MCCE), is part of NATO’s Pilot Project 5 (PP5) to validate emerging technologies in operational settings. The network will enable low-latency communications, support secure data exchange, and maintain service continuity even under electromagnetic interference, connecting C5ISR systems and improving interoperability among allied nations. Spain has previously established a 5G Cyber Defense Center with Telefónica and tested portable 5G tactical networks developed by Atika, which can deploy mobile coverage in minutes for deployed units. This initiative positions connectivity as a strategic military asset, integrating drones, sensors, and AI systems into a unified digital architecture.
