SPML Infra secured a INR 1,128 crore ($120 million) engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract from NTPC Ltd to develop a 1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar, India. The project includes a 250 MW/1,000 MWh BESS comprising 5 MWh DC containers with battery and thermal management systems, 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV DC and AC cables, a 220 kV switchyard, and all associated accessories. Scheduled for completion within 18 months, the BESS will integrate with NTPC’s existing thermal power infrastructure to enable peak load management, grid stability, and efficient renewable energy integration. The 15-year operation and maintenance period following commissioning underscores the long-term commitment to energy storage reliability. SPML Infra’s collaboration with technology partner Energy Vault, listed on NYSE under ticker NRGV, highlights the project’s alignment with India’s scale and ambition for advanced energy storage solutions.
