Squadron Energy and Windlab formed a 50/50 joint venture to develop the Bungaban solar and battery project featuring a 500 MW solar facility and a 400 MW battery energy storage system. The project will be built on a 1,500-hectare site at Bungaban, about 50 kilometres northeast of Wandoan in Queensland's Western Downs region, and is being developed alongside a separate 1.4 GW Bungaban wind project. Squadron Energy and Windlab confirmed construction of the solar and battery project is scheduled to start in mid-2028 while the co-located wind project construction is anticipated to begin in 2027. The developers noted the projects have separate planning approvals, grid connection arrangements, and financing, but their proximity creates opportunities to share infrastructure and extend renewable generation across more hours. The federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water advised on 2026-09-28 that the solar and battery project is not a controlled action under the EPBC Act, supporting progress toward financial close and delivery.
