SSEN Transmission awards framework agreement to Hitachi Energy UK and GE Vernova for modular substations to support renewable grid connections

Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Transmission · Country: United Kingdom · Announced: 2026-05-11

SSEN Transmission awarded a framework agreement to Hitachi Energy UK and GE Vernova to deliver modular substations for renewable grid connections across its network. The modular substations, designed to operate at 132kV and 33kV, are suited for smaller-scale projects including wind farms and other renewable generation. Energisations are expected to begin from autumn 2028, with assembly, wiring, and testing completed off-site to reduce construction disruption. The approach offers standardized designs, smaller site footprints, and improved safety and environmental outcomes. Hitachi Energy UK will provide Integrated GIS Assembly with EconiQ gas-insulated switchgear, while GE Vernova will contribute g³ technology as part of its SF₆-free solution portfolio.
