SSEN Transmission signed a long‑term framework agreement with Sumitomo Electric Industries and Van Oord Offshore Wind UK on 9 July 2026 to provide engineering, procurement, supply, transport and installation services for HVDC subsea cable systems. The agreement will underpin future strategic subsea transmission reinforcements in northern Scotland, including the proposed Shetland 2 HVDC link that will connect the Shetland Islands to the mainland grid. Sumitomo Electric will deliver HVDC cable manufacturing and supply expertise, while Van Oord will handle offshore transport and installation of the cables. The framework also supports Sumitomo Electric’s investment in a new cable manufacturing facility at Nigg in the Highlands, enhancing local manufacturing capacity. The deal provides long‑term visibility for delivery partners and will accelerate the rollout of critical subsea infrastructure across the north of Scotland.
