State Electricity Commission and Energy Dome to develop 20MW/200MWh compressed CO2 long-duration energy storage system in Victoria, Australia
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Australia · Capacity: 20 MW · Announced: 2026-07-10
Victoria’s State Electricity Commission (SEC) and Italian clean technology company Energy Dome announced a partnership to develop the state’s first long-duration energy storage (LDES) facility in the Latrobe Valley. The project will feature a 20MW/200MWh compressed CO2 energy storage system capable of supplying electricity continuously for 10 to 12 hours, marking Australia’s first commercial deployment of closed-loop compressed CO2 storage technology. The facility will be located at SEC Energy Works, a 143-hectare energy innovation precinct in Hazelwood North, designed to host new energy infrastructure and storage technologies. Planning and design have begun, with early stakeholder and community consultation underway. SEC CEO Chris Miller emphasized the critical role of long-duration storage in balancing the grid as Victoria targets 65% renewable energy by 2030.
