Susterra and Hyvity form joint venture Central de Bombeo Atacama to develop 450 MW pumped-hydro storage project in Chile

Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Chile · Capacity: 450 MW · Announced: 2026-07-15

Chilean company Susterra and French company Hyvity created Central de Bombeo Atacama, a joint venture focused on developing pumped-hydroelectric storage projects. This partnership is behind the Central de Almacenamiento de Energía Renovable por Bombeo Atacama, a 450 MW / 3,600 MWh project in Caldera, Atacama region, Chile. The project, currently undergoing environmental evaluation, aims to temporarily store electricity from renewable sources using a reversible pumped-hydro power plant. It involves two artificial reservoirs, each with a capacity of approximately 4.8 million m³, connected by pressure pipes and a powerhouse. The estimated investment for the project is $900 million, with construction projected to start in October 2027 and conclude in February 2032.
