Terna and STEG award €770 million conversion station contract to Hitachi Energy

Terna and STEG awarded a €770 million contract to Hitachi Energy for the conversion stations supporting the Elmed HVDC interconnection with Tunisia. The contract covers the design, supply, and installation of high‑voltage direct current converter stations linking the Italian mainland to the Tunisian grid. The project is part of the Elmed interconnection, which aims to transport renewable generation from the South and islands to the North of Italy. The award, announced on 24 June 2026, strengthens Hitachi Energy’s presence in the Mediterranean transmission market. The deal will enable Terna to increase cross‑border capacity and supports Italy’s target of 107 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. No advisors were disclosed in the announcement.
