Traylor Bros., Walsh Construction, and Skanska awarded $1.3B contract for Hudson River Tunnel Section (Package 1C) as part of the Hudson Tunnel Project
Type: Supply Agreement · Technology: Transport · Country: United States · Value: $1.3B · Announced: 2026-05-04
The Gateway Development Commission awarded a $1.3 billion contract to the joint venture of Traylor Bros., Walsh Construction, and Skanska to deliver Package 1C of the Hudson Tunnel Project, which involves constructing the Hudson River Tunnel Section beneath the Hudson River between New Jersey and Manhattan. The scope includes boring two new parallel, single-track tunnels totaling approximately 7,250 feet each, installing tunnel liners and floors, and constructing nine cross passages connecting the tunnel tubes. Additional work involves ground stabilization near the Hudson Bergen Light Rail and permanent underpinning of the Willow Avenue Bridge. The project is a critical component of the broader Hudson Tunnel Project, which aims to improve reliability for passenger rail service on the Northeast Corridor by rehabilitating the existing North River Tunnel and building two new tubes under the Hudson River. The Traylor/Walsh/Skanska joint venture will use custom-built mixed-use tunnel boring machines designed for mixed ground conditions, including weathered rock, soft soil, and stabilized ground. The contract represents one of the most technically demanding tunnel packages in the Hudson Tunnel Project, requiring complex ground treatment and segmental lining installation in challenging subsurface conditions.
