Type: Partnership · Technology: Gas · Country: Turkey, Northern Cyprus · Value: $700M · Announced: 2026-07-10
The Government of Turkey and the authorities of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus signed a memorandum of understanding to construct a 101-kilometer submarine gas pipeline, with 97 kilometers underwater, connecting Turkey's Anamur cape to the Teknecik power plant in Northern Cyprus. The pipeline is expected to be completed by 2028 at an estimated cost of $700 million, according to Erhan Arikli, Northern Cyprus' Minister of Public Works. The project aims to supply natural gas to the Mediterranean island, addressing energy needs in the region. The memorandum was signed in the presence of Turkey's Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, who highlighted the pipeline's strategic importance for regional energy security. The agreement follows a decade of hydrocarbon exploration efforts by Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, which previously sparked diplomatic tensions with Greece and the Republic of Cyprus.
