UNSW Canberra partners with Voltval, JT Solar Technology and other firms to launch AI-powered modular power portal pilot for Sydney apartments

Type: Partnership · Technology: Solar, Storage · Country: Australia · Announced: 2026-06-25

UNSW Canberra, Voltval and JT Solar Technology have formed a partnership to launch an AI‑powered modular power portal system (MPPS) pilot across multiple Sydney sites. The pilot targets apartment buildings in Sydney, aiming to improve energy flow and enable rooftop solar and battery integration for residents, addressing the fact that only 3.5% of NSW apartment dwellers currently have rooftop solar access. The MPPS will forecast generation, coordinate distributed energy resources and balance electricity flows in real time, with the research team expecting up to a 30% reduction in operating costs for participating buildings. The initiative is supported by a $1.2 million grant from the Australian Department of Education’s Trailblazer Recycling & Clean Energy (TRaCE) program and involves additional partners Beaumont Strata Management, Ocean Building Management, Piper Alderman, SAJ Electric, Squared‑X and One Stop Warehouse. By enabling apartment residents to participate in distributed energy resources, the partnership seeks to accelerate the decarbonisation of dense urban housing and demonstrate a scalable model for other cities worldwide. The pilot’s AI layer, led by Associate Professor Huadong Mo, will be tested on real‑world sites, with results expected to inform future commercial roll‑outs and policy frameworks.
