Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions form 50-50 joint venture to integrate and optimize battery energy storage systems
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Finland · Announced: 2026-06-15
Wärtsilä and German solar PV equipment manufacturer RCT Solutions GmbH announced a 50-50 joint venture to integrate and optimize Wärtsilä’s battery energy storage system (BESS) business, marking a strategic shift after an 18-month review of Wärtsilä’s energy storage division. The joint venture will combine Wärtsilä’s BESS technology, customer base, and project expertise with RCT Solutions’ engineering capabilities and vertical integration know-how, including its existing U.S. BESS manufacturing initiative. RCT Solutions CEO Peter Fath will lead the new entity upon closing, expected in Q3 2026, while Wärtsilä will transfer less than 5% of its net assets into the business. Wärtsilä previously reported its energy storage segment generated €694 million in net sales in 2025, representing just over 10% of its total net sales, with a profitability of 3.3% compared to 12.1% across its other businesses. The transaction is expected to result in a €40–50 million operating loss for Wärtsilä in 2026 but is projected to turn profitable by the end of 2027.
