Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions form joint venture for energy storage business

Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Germany · Announced: 2026-06-15

Wärtsilä has agreed to establish a joint venture for its global Energy Storage business with Germany’s RCT Solutions GmbH, creating a new platform focused on utility-scale battery energy storage systems. The joint venture will be owned equally by Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions, with the possibility of additional investors joining at a later stage. The business includes Wärtsilä’s utility-scale battery energy storage and optimisation activities, which generated net sales of €694 million in 2025 and employed around 480 people globally. The portfolio includes integrated battery energy storage systems, optimisation software, intelligent controls, and lifecycle support services. RCT Solutions has the aim to develop into a global vertically integrated battery energy storage system player, and this transaction offers an excellent opportunity for the Wärtsilä Energy Storage business to strengthen its competitiveness. The joint venture is expected to be loss-making in 2026 due to lower recent order intake and transformation costs, with Wärtsilä estimating a €40 million to €50 million impact on its full-year operating result.
