Wärtsilä forms joint venture with RCT Solutions to launch Valo storage integrator
Type: Partnership · Technology: Storage · Country: Finland · Capacity: 20 GWh · Announced: 2026-10-01
Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions formed a 50:50 joint venture called Valo and transferred Wärtsilä’s global energy storage business to the new company on 2026-10-01. Valo starts with more than 20 GWh of battery energy storage capacity across more than 130 projects worldwide and will operate as a utility-scale BESS integrator. Wärtsilä said the transferred Energy Storage unit had about 480 employees, posted net sales of €694 million in 2025, and that closing was subject to regulatory approvals and arrangement of a financing package. Wärtsilä estimated the joint venture would be loss-making in 2026 because of low order intake and R&D write-downs, with an impact on its 2026 operating result of €40 million to €50 million, and expected Valo to return to profitability toward the end of 2027. RCT Solutions brings experience in engineering and establishing battery and solar manufacturing facilities and an existing integrated BESS manufacturing initiative in the United States that could provide near-term vertical integration for Valo.
