Waga Energy to finance, construct, own, and operate RNG production unit at Great Oak Landfill in North Carolina
Type: Partnership · Technology: Biomass · Country: United States · Capacity: 179 GWh · Announced: 2026-07-01
Randolph County selected Waga Energy through a competitive process in 2025 to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) production unit at the Great Oak Landfill, operated by Waste Management of Carolinas, Inc. Under a 20-year agreement, Waga Energy will finance, construct, own, and operate the RNG facility, which will use the patented WAGABOX technology to upgrade landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG. The initial design capacity of the unit is 3,000 scfm, equivalent to approximately 4,800 Nm³/h, and is expected to produce about 610,000 MMBtu (179 GWh) of RNG annually for injection into the local gas pipeline. The project will avoid approximately 47,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions per year by displacing fossil fuels, aligning with Randolph County's long-term environmental and energy goals. Waga Energy will also invest in the gas collection and control system to maximize landfill gas collection and reduce local emissions, supporting the circular economy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels in the community.
