Windey Energy acquires Siemens Gamesa's former wind turbine factory in Camaçari, Bahia, to produce BESS

Type: Acquisition · Technology: Storage · Country: Brazil · Capacity: 1.5 GWh · Announced: 2026-07-21

Chinese state-owned company Windey Energy acquired Siemens Gamesa's former wind turbine factory in Camaçari, Bahia, in 2023. The acquisition, valued at an estimated R$100 million over three to five years (with over R$30 million in the first year), was strategic for Windey to establish local production of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Brazil. The 25,000 m² industrial plant, already equipped with complete infrastructure, will initially focus on BESS production with an annual capacity of 1.5 GWh, expandable to 5-7 GWh. This move allows Windey to enter the Brazilian market quickly and reduce CAPEX compared to competitors building new facilities from scratch. The first national BESS unit is expected to be assembled in Q1 2027, ahead of local content requirements for FINAME/BNDES financing.
