Type: Financing · Technology: Hydro · Country: Tajikistan · Value: $300M · Announced: 2026-07-02

The World Bank approved a $300 million grant from its International Development Association to finance the second phase of the Rogun hydropower plant in Tajikistan. The financing will fund civil works and electromechanical equipment, enabling the plant to generate 14,400 GWh of renewable electricity annually, about 60 % of the country's current output. The funding supports ongoing construction aimed at completing the plant in the coming years. The project will provide reliable electricity to 10 million people, reduce chronic winter shortages, and allow power exports to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, strengthening regional energy markets. A consortium of development partners—including Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, European Investment Bank and others—has pledged additional support, underscoring the regional connectivity benefits highlighted by the World Bank’s Infrastructure Director.
