X1 Wind and Technip Energies secure Spanish EIA approval for PlemCat offshore wind test site under NextFloat Project

Type: Partnership · Technology: Offshore Wind · Country: Spain · Announced: 2026-07-08

X1 Wind and Technip Energies secured Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval from Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge for the PlemCat test site in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. The approval, published in Spain’s Boletín Oficial del Estado on July 8, 2026, clears the way for the NextFloat Project and the deployment of X1 Wind’s X100 8.5MW floating offshore wind platform. The X100 platform combines a tension-leg mooring system with semi-submersible features to reduce seabed footprint and minimize environmental impact, using vertical mooring lines and avoiding chains to reduce seabed disturbance and underwater noise. The project is backed by private capital, EU-funded NextFloat and NextFloat+, the French-funded PAREF project, and Spain’s RenMarinas programme. The EIA approval follows the award of a Statement of Compliance for Basic Design for the X100 platform from DNV, positioning the partners for commercial-scale pilot deployment.
