X1 Wind secures Environmental Impact Assessment approval for PlemCat floating offshore wind test site in Spain

Type: Development · Technology: Offshore Wind · Country: Spain · Announced: 2026-07-08

X1 Wind and PlemCat secured a favorable Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the PlemCat floating offshore wind test site in the Spanish Mediterranean, clearing a critical regulatory hurdle for deployment. The test site, located off the coast of Catalonia, will serve as a pilot platform for X1 Wind’s 8 MW floating wind turbine prototype, designed for deep-water installations. Regulatory approval follows a 12-month assessment process, with the project now positioned to advance to the construction and deployment phase in 2026. The initiative aligns with Spain’s 2030 offshore wind target of 3 GW, aiming to accelerate commercial-scale floating wind development in the Mediterranean. X1 Wind, a Barcelona-based floating wind technology developer, will leverage the test site to validate its X30 platform, which features a downwind turbine configuration and a lightweight floating structure.
