Yabucoa Energy LLC signs 100 MW battery storage contract with Puerto Rico's electric authority

Yabucoa Energy LLC signed a contract with the Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica de Puerto Rico (AEE) for a 100 MW battery energy storage system delivering 400 MWh of capacity, to be sited on the former Shell refinery in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. The agreement obliges Yabucoa Energy to operate, maintain, and guarantee the full 400 MWh capacity for a 20‑year term, with provisions to replace or expand components as needed. Interconnection infrastructure costs are limited to $20 million, and any cost overruns allow the promoter to terminate the contract without further obligations. The Puerto Rico Energy Negotiated Board approved the contract on 27 July 2026, ordering the removal of clauses that would permit progressive capacity reductions due to battery degradation. This deal expands Puerto Rico's utility‑scale storage portfolio, following earlier approvals for 80 MW/320 MWh and 400 MWh projects in the same year.
